The Construction Insurance Risk Engineers Group (CIREG) has released its first guidance on Managing Flood Risk During Construction. The aim of the guide is to raise awareness of flood hazards during the construction phase of projects and identify suitable risk management activity to be implemented via a Flood Risk Management Plan. The guidance covers a range of flooding types:
- Pluvial, such as surface water flooding and flash floods
- Fluvial, from rivers and streams
- Coastal, such as tidal and storm surges
- Groundwater
- Utility water mains burst
- Reservoir or dam failure or overflow
- Snow-melt waters
The guidance covers the whole of the project period, from design to completion, and provides information on:
- Project Flood Risk Assessment
- Flood Controls – Design, Planning and Selection
- Resilience and Mitigation from Flood Water
- Protection of the Construction Envelope from Rainstorm
- Emergency Response to Flood
The guidance also provides further information on suitable mitigations depending on flood probability, and a number of checklists which will assist in the completion of the Project Flood Risk Assessment.
