Stephen Bamforth

Senior Partner and Group Chief Executive

Stephen joined Griffiths & Armour in 1986 as a trainee broker after graduating in Natural Science from Churchill College, Cambridge. He qualified as a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute in 1990, became a Partner in the Group in 1994, and Senior Partner and Group Chief Executive in 2003.

Stephen specialises in advising construction consultants on their Professional Indemnity insurance requirements and maintains an active involvement with both key clients and insurer partners.

He represents Griffiths & Armour on a number of industry sector trade bodies and professional associations; he also works closely with Government on proposed legislative changes and innovative approaches to the management and insurance of risk within construction.

Matt Donnelly

Matt, who has over 30 years’ experience in international risk management and insurance, started his career in the insurance sector following graduation from Manchester University. He joined Griffiths & Armour in 2000, was made a Partner in 2003 and appointed Managing Director of Griffiths & Armour Insurance Brokers in 2004.

Matt's principal areas of expertise and responsibility include client management and production, insurer market management and serving the needs of the Partnership's international clients as a Main Board member of Assurex Global, the world’s largest privately held commercial insurance, risk management and brokerage group.

In 2016, Matt was appointed to the position of Chairman of Assurex Global following a successful 2 year term as chairman of the Assurex Europe Middle East and Africa (EMEA) Region. Matt continues to lead our international broker partner relationships, which stretch across the Assurex partnership's 600 offices worldwide. He is a founding Board member of GAWS of London, our newly established International Wholesale Brokerage which is a joint partnership between Griffiths & Armour and Woodruff Sawyer in California.

Matt is a Chartered Insurance broker and sits on the Board of the Chartered Insurance Institute's (CII) Insurance Broking Faculty, which encourages and promotes good practice, the highest standards of competence, expertise and professionalism.

Carl Evans

Partner and Managing Director

Carl has a Geography degree from the University of Leicester. He is a Chartered Insurance Broker and a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute.

Carl joined Griffiths & Armour in 1992 as a broker in the Professional Indemnity division, making Partner in 2001. During his twenty years with the Group, Carl has involved himself in all aspects of the division and still retains personal involvement with a number of key clients. These range from consulting engineers, architects and construction consultants, to solicitors and multi-disciplinary plc service providers.

He has been at the forefront of pioneering innovative insurance programmes – for example, our PI scheme designed for approved inspectors. He is also actively involved in exploring and creating new opportunities with key stakeholders - resulting in important joint ventures such as our PI scheme for insurance brokers.

Carl was appointed Managing Director of Professional Risks in 2009.

Paul Berg

Paul has an Economics and Accountancy degree from the University of Dundee, and joined Griffiths & Armour in 1990.

During his time with the Group, Paul has led teams in our Liverpool and regional offices, and advised a broad spectrum of professional firms, institutions and associations on all aspects of Professional Indemnity insurance.

As a result, a broad experience of professional liability exposures in different jurisdictions has been accumulated; this experience is used to assist clients implement effective risk management strategies and deliver robust insurance placements that meet their confirmed global needs.

Paul retains an active involvement with a number of major clients of the Group - these include multi-disciplinary plcs, consulting engineers, architects, management and cost consultants and solicitors. He is also actively involved in new product development across a range of professions and jurisdictions.

Nicholas Brace

Nick is a Chartered Insurance Broker and Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute. He joined Griffiths & Armour in 1977 as a broker in our Corporate division and moved on to the Professional Indemnity division in 1981, making partner in 1991.

In the mid-1990’s Nick was responsible for overseeing the successful establishment of our Glasgow office, and spent five years there before returning to Liverpool in late 2000.

Nick has been exposed to a variety of high profile firms within the construction industry, including multi-disciplinary plcs, consulting engineers, architects, solicitors and IT consultants both domestically and internationally.

Carl is a Chartered Insurance Broker, an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute, and a Fellow of the Institute of Risk Management.

He joined Griffiths & Armour in 2001 and has specific responsibility for client retention and development within the General Insurance division, together with the management of our Manchester office.

Carl's earlier career was spent with major multi-national insurance brokers. He is highly skilled in the design and implementation of risk management and insurance programmes for major corporate buyers across a wide range of industries, mainly within the United Kingdom. His specialist areas include retail, manufacturing, property owners, and due diligence work.

David graduated in Business Studies at Millbank College of Commerce in Liverpool and joined Griffiths & Armour in 1983 as a broker in our Corporate division, before moving to our Professional Risks division in 1986.

During his time with the Group, David has gained a wealth of experience dealing with international and multi-disciplinary consulting engineers.

He became a Partner in 2003 and is a Director of Griffiths & Armour Global Risks Ltd, overseeing operations in our London office. Much of David’s focus involves managing our scheme business and developing positive relationships with key insurer partners.

Simon Keenan

Simon joined Griffiths & Armour’s graduate training scheme in September 2000 after reading Mathematics with Management at the University of Liverpool. He has worked throughout the UK and also in the Group’s Dublin and Hong Kong offices. He has expertise in dealing with financial institutions, property owners, charities, consulting engineers and NHS Trusts amongst others.

Simon became Director of Griffiths & Armour in June 2009 and, in addition to managing major clients within the Corporate division, currently directs the Group's General Insurance Claims division.

Simon is an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute and past president of the Liverpool Insurance Institute.

Richard Trotter

Richard is an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute. He joined Griffiths & Armour in 2000 having previously worked for over twenty years with a major multi-national insurance broker. It was there, through a number of senior roles, that he gained extensive experience in managing and developing UK and International clients across many industry sectors.

As a Partner, Richard's focus remains very much as a client practitioner, providing strategic guidance on the delivery and development of risk solutions to the Corporate client base.  He is also involved on a day-to-day basis with the management of specific clients in a Guardian/Account Director role. Sectors in which he brings his expertise to bear include food, leisure, retail, engineering, and financial institutions.

Richard has an active role in the management and development of the Group's relationship with Assurex, the largest independent network of brokers in the world.

David Whalley

Partner and Group Finance Director

David has a Spanish and Portuguese degree from Liverpool University (as part of his studies he lived for a year in Seville in Southern Spain), and is a Chartered Accountant and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales (ICAEW).

David gained his professional qualification with Grant Thornton from 1990 to 1993. Post qualification, he moved out of public practice and relocated to the South East of England to join a multi-national insurance broker.  He then spent four years travelling all over the UK, Europe and North and South America making good use of both his language and finance skills.

David joined Griffiths & Armour in its London-based subsidiary in 1997 as Finance Manager and progressed to Finance Director of that company. In 2001 he moved back to the North West to take over as Group Finance Director and became a Partner in 2003. In addition to his finance responsibilities David also chairs our Insurer Security Committee.
